They were just looking for a bit of wealth redistribution. The Rogers cable conglomerate bought the City network in , Shaw bought Global Television out of bankruptcy in , and Bell Canada, which enjoys a monopoly on satellite TV, reacquired a controlling interest in CTV later that year. These were the death throes of convergence, the media experiment that visited the world at the turn of the millennium and found its greatest foothold in Canada, because ours was one of the few countries without limits on television and newspaper companies going into business together. Its television and newspaper assets were sold off separately out of bankruptcy. So hare-brained was the partnership between newspapers and television that CTV and the Globe and Mail voluntarily dissolved their year marriage in , joining a worldwide de-convergence trend. We are now dealing with the consequences of convergence and picking up the pieces of a media system that has been battered by technological change, regulatory neglect as a Senate report termed it and no small amount of ownership connivance. As a result, we now have levels of ownership concentration and vertical integration—carriage companies owning television networks—that are among the highest in the world.

The events surrounding the Secession of involved many of our ancestors, and so we do well to have a reasonably accurate understanding of what that Secession was all about. With Reformation Day around the corner and so a brief emphasis on Church History it may be good to share some information about the Secession in this column.
Background The church in the Netherlands at the beginning of the nineteenth century was officially bound to the Word of God as confessed in the three Forms of Unity, just as we are today.

Bruce British New Testament scholar F. Bruce explains the methods used for dating the New Testament and stresses the importance of avoiding criteria that are too speculative and subjective. Why are the dates of the books of the New Testament of such intense interest to Christians? First of all, because the Christian faith, unlike other major religions, is not built merely on a set of religious or ethical ideals.
Rather it is grounded in real historical events. If it can be shown that the New Testament was not compiled until several generations after Christ, the door would be left open for serious garbling of the facts or even outright manipulation. Secondly, because the central fact of the Christian faith, the Incarnation—which defies human comprehension—demands solid historical support if it is to win the allegiance of sober-minded people. We have therefore asked Dr.
Bruce, gratefully remembered by college students of the last two decades for his New Testament Documents: The dating of ancient texts has developed into a sophisticated science in the course of the last two centuries. For the past century or so, New Testament critics have assumed a date of around A.

Additional Information In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content: Book Reviews If the strengths of the book are readily apparent, so, too, are its limitations. Included are several marginal papers, which add little, if anything, to our understanding of the Baptist experience in Canada. Especially problematic are those articles that use the past selectively, only to provide a launching pad for a discussion of present or future directions within the denomination, or to urge a return to a probably mythical ‘true’ Baptist position, most often located in the nineteenth century.
A more critical selection process would have resulted in a slimmer but much stronger volume. Another problem is the absence of any articles on Baptists in the Atlantic region, where the denomination, and its historiography, are particularly strong. All the Baptist conferences of the past twenty years have yielded enough papers from this region to make up a separate volume. In this case, an important part of the ‘Strands of Canadian Baptist History’ is missing. On balance, I would argue that the best of the papers from conferences representing all parts of the country should be collected into one volume, to convey a comprehensive picture of Canadian Baptist history.
McGill-Queen’s University Press By focusing on a restricted geographical area and a numerically small denomination, he is able to provide a useful case study, in which the forces of both the old and new worlds and the impact of specific individuals can be clearly seen.

We need to be analytical and explore why exactly, of all the provincial politicians in Ontario or Quebec , she is the one appearing at SJW events. The answer concerns calculated attempts at increasing her own prominence, which has been severely lacking in recent years. This intersects with a basic need to distract any future attention away from her criminal antecedence. DiNovo should have been jailed for years, like any male drug smuggler Cheri DiNovo will talk about male privilege, heterosexual privilege and white privilege, but not about her privilege in not going to jail for the long time she deserved.
By that standard, my grandparents should have been the biggest drug lords continental Europe has ever seen. The end result was, thankfully, more benign. Yet it still resulted in damage that the property owner has had to fix.

The heart of the preaching and teaching in these churches is that Jesus of Nazareth is both true man and true God and is the long-awaited Messiah who suffered and died for the sins of God’s people, and that this demands a thankful response of faith and obedience. Like other Reformed churches, they teach that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone, follow Reformed Calvinist theology, and have adopted the Three Forms of Unity Belgic Confession , Heidelberg Catechism , and Canons of Dort as their doctrinal standards.
The member churches believe they are part of the one true church of God, distinguished by the marks of the true church. Currently there are over 54 congregations, which can be found in British Columbia , Alberta , Manitoba and Ontario , as well as in the American states of Washington , Michigan and Colorado. This approach to church polity reflects their continental Reformed roots.
It is both anti-hierarchical and anti-independent, promoting both the autonomy of the local church and the need to cooperate within a federation. Only male members who have made profession of faith and may be considered to meet the conditions as set forth in Holy Scripture e.

Messenger Following a review of the New South Wales Residential Tenancies Act in and extended consultations, the NSW government has introduced a number of reforms to parliament. Debate is expected to occur this week. However, without reform to current eviction proceedings, many housing advocates have expressed concern that these generally good proposals will have little effect. Today, 45 housing researchers from a range of disciplines have signed the following open letter.
We are academics who research and teach about housing. We have in common commitment to the principle that everyone should have a secure, affordable home of decent standard, whether they own or rent. Too often, however, our rental housing sector fails to deliver on this principle. There are numerous reasons for this; one of them is the legal insecurity of tenants under current New South Wales residential tenancy laws.
In particular, the provision for landlords to give termination notices, with no grounds, at the end of a fixed-term tenancy or during a continuing tenancy is contrary to genuine security. The deficiencies of our current laws are becoming worse, as more households rent, and rent for longer into their lives. Our deficient current laws are also increasingly out of step with tenancy laws in comparable jurisdictions. We call on the NSW state government to improve security for renters, by legislating to end no-grounds termination by landlords and providing instead for a prescribed set of reasonable grounds for terminations.

Revelation is a difficult book to interpret. Those who have studied it have come away with widely differing conclusions. But there are some things common to most interpretations of it. Most commentators have noticed that the heavenly vision that John saw was seen on a Lord’s Day. Furthermore, what John saw in his vision was a heavenly Lord’s Day worship service. Revelation takes place on the Lord’s Day Rev.
In them we hear expressions of joy and lament, cries for revenge against enemies, confession of sin, acknowledgement of utter dependence on God, recitations of his mighty acts in history, and finally songs of praise and adoration. With the rest of the Old Testament, Christians share the biblical Psalter with the Jewish people, with whom it originates. Many of the Psalms are ascribed to David himself, and there is even a tradition making him the author of the entirety of the book.
While there is no certainty to the ascriptions traditionally prefacing each psalm, it is likely that many of them do indeed originate with the revered founder of the Judaic dynasty. If the latest of the psalms were composed during the Persian and perhaps even into the Hasmonean eras, then the Psalter was compiled over the better part of a millennium of Jewish history before being finalized sometime during the second temple period.
Translated into Greek as part of the Septuagint, the Psalms naturally found their way into early Christian usage as well. The New Testament writers see in several of the Psalms, for example Psalms 2, 8, 22, 41, 69, and , a foretaste of the coming Messiah. The early church fathers added to this number, seeing Jesus Christ, not only in several other individual psalms, but in the whole of the Psalter itself.
Thus the psalms of lament came to be seen as describing, not merely the miseries of the human authors, but the very sufferings of Christ. Further, the imprecatory psalms were no longer cries for vengeance by a hurting and oppressed people, but invocations of the very judgement of Christ against the enemies of his coming kingdom. Thus in some Christian communities the singing of a psalm is ended with a trinitarian doxology. Exactly how they were sung we can only speculate.

After Melanchthon’s death in , extremist Lutherans from whom Luther had previously distanced himself accused Melanchthon’s successors in the ” Philippist ” cause of Crypto-Calvinism and mercilessly persecuted and sometimes killed them in several states, especially Saxony. Other states, such as Hesse -Cassel , remained openly Philippist and Reformed.

It wasn’t long before this was replaced by the red, white and blue cockade or roundel. The aircraft depicted here would have operated from Naval Air Station Great Yarmouth in the summer of Photo via Steven Bradley, illustration via Mikhail Bykov Wings Palette There was a short period immediately after the adoption of the French-style cockade to identify Royal Flying Corps aircraft, when both devices were employed — in the case of this recently downed Royal Aircraft Factory B.
This photograph of German officers posing with their trophy was taken near Phalempin, in northern France, 26 September The aircraft was later made airworthy again and given German markings, thus adding to the confusion. Obviously, no colour photos of its use exist, but this photo taken by one of the world’s best and most well-known air-to-air A2A photographers, Gavin Conroy of New Zealand, shows us just how it would have looked on this SE5a from Peter Jackson’s The Vintage Aviator Co.
The centre red circle is much smaller relative to the other rings compared to later RAF roundels of the Second World War. Gavin Conroy The roundel would undergo many changes before, during, and after the Second World War, all of which have caused much confusion in the minds of the uninitiated. By the end of the war, there were nearly a dozen official variations of the Royal Air Force roundel, and even variations of each of these.
Most roundels were painted on at the factory where the aircraft was built, but they were not always executed to the most recent standards. Some roundels were applied as pre-made decals at the factory, while, after repairs in the field, other roundels were applied by hand and could have spurious diameter ratios or even additional outlines.
There was an official drafted standard for roundel application, describing the type of roundel, its diameter and its exact position on the fuselage and wings for each aircraft type, but the exigencies of an air force at war caused many a roundel to be applied with only a nod to the rules.
